Vanguard - Saga of Heroes

Mergers: One year later

By chance I was looking at my old Vanguard posts, and realized that the server mergers went down a year ago this week.  Has it really been that long?

As much angst as it caused what with people losing their names and houses, it turned out to be in the best interest of the PvE game.  There was a period of time between the mergers and the Age of Conan release (interestingly enough), where the servers had to be consolidated for the sake of the game.  Subscription numbers were pretty low near the time of the mergers, and to not take any action would have made the world seem even emptier and acquiring groups a difficult proposition, which would have caused more people to leave, thus sparking a nasty feedback loop.

The two US PVE servers, Seradon and Xeth are well populated, with lots of groups and chatter, and the community has really come together.  There's plenty activity on both servers, with several large guilds recruiting (cheers Safe Haven!), and events being organized and run weekly.  This bodes well for Vanguard, when you consider that it all occurring during the traditional summer doldrums of MMOs, when the number of players dips since everyone has other things to do than sit inside during the summer.

I have, however, read some posts by newer players complaining about the availability of groups under level 15, and yes that is still an issue, although not nearly as bad as it would have been back when there were 10+ servers.  This seems to be largely due to the fact that there are a wide variety of racial starting zones (somewhere between 6 and 8 I believe), which tends to spread players out until they start to find the more popular level spots around level 15.  Most everyone is hoping that the Isle of Dawn will help to relieve this spreading of lower characters, since it will offer new players a single zone in which to adventure.  This will hopefully make the lower levels of the game seem more populated as well as encourage lowbie grouping.

So, hindsight being 20/20, the folks on the Vanguard team made the smart choice by merging.  I'll always remember looking at the list of servers when creating Inara and Lunestra, and thinking to myself that Targonar and Woefeather sounded like interesting places to spread my roots.  So to you Targonar and Woefeather, I pour out a little!

Barding ain't just with lutes anymore

ScreenShot_00165.JPGAfter a few frustratings tries and near hits, Lunestra finally was able to make up a batch of leather barding.  I'm wasn't too enthused about the improvements to mount stability--I was more interested in how great the stuff looks.  There's also apparently a way to apply dye to the barding to change the color, but I'm pretty pleased with the gray and tan look that I ended up with.  I suppose this would be the MMO equivalent to pimping out my ride...

Thatching away

ScreenShot_00162.jpgAfter a ton of grinding (and trust me, crafting in Vanguard is pretty much pure grind), Lunestra dinged 21, and was able to go out and learn Thestran thatching.  So now she's going to be dutifully thatching away to help build the house.  I've already gotten 2/20 thatch made and in place.  Another benefit of her being an apprentice outfitter is she will be able to building sails, ropes and rigging to help Inara build ships.

A place to call my own

ScreenShot_00147.JPGHere's Inara standing in the shell of her soon-to-be house.  Around a month ago, I finally scrapped up 2 gold 50 silver and decided it was time to locate a permanent residence.  Housing in Vanguard is instituted in a pretty unique fashion--the plots and homes actually live in the game world, similar to Ultima Online.  They are not instanced like EQ2 or LoTRO, so anyone riding around in the world can come upon your home and see it in the landscape.  This also means that there is a a limited amount of space within the world for homes, so finding a plot in the right price range is a lot like the real world, without realtor.com and an actual realtor.  I spent the better part of one morning, riding around the various areas set aside for housing, looking for a cheap 2g50s plot, and eventually, after much searching came across this little spot in Hidden Cove in NE Thestra.  I snapped up the plot itself, and had been paying the weekly 25 silver upkeep for the past few weeks, until yesterday I accidentally pressed the "Begin Construction" button, and up popped the frame of my house.  I figured that now would be as good a time as any to get started on raising the roof.

I'm building a mid-level expsense house, a Thestran single story thatched roof house.  It's the right balance for me between looks, space and cost.  Most of the components that go into house construction are supplied as crafted goods from players, so I'll basically be like a real general contractor, out finding subcontractors to supply things like sandstone bricks and firegrass thatch.  Fortunately, Inara is a carpenter by trade, so she can produce the 40 wood panels and 20 wood beams required for the house, and should be able to furnish it as well.  I'll keep the photos coming as the bulding progresses!

Merge Mania

The mergers of the PvE servers are finished in Vanguard, and both Lunestra and Inara survived the merger with their names intact. I logged in briefly yesterday to check up on the merger status, but I didn't stay long enough to see what the population was like. Seeing that the Guild Wars expansion goes live at 3:00 AM EST tonight, I probably won't be playing too much VG for a while. It's weird, but GW has a certain charm to it, and even being in a terrible PUG last night didn't take off much of the shine.

Vanguard comments

Yes, I'm still one of the few people playing Vanguard. Game Update #2 hit a week or so ago, and the server mergers are scheduled to go down this upcoming week. GU2 had some pretty decent changes to the LFG interface, and it has certainly made connecting with people easier. I have noticed however, that it tends to make you more accessible for what other people want to do. I set my preferred dungeon/quests to some of the stuff around Skawlra Rock (since I still would like to try and get the Hunter's League weapon), but I never really got any bites. I did however get a few invites to help other groups run places like Trengal Keep and Coterie Infineum, which was a lot of fun. My attitude towards the game is pretty much based on the last time I grouped up. Everytime I group, I have a great time and want to play more, but if I log in don't group for a while, I get a *meh* feeling. I'm hoping, along with everyone else, that the mergers combined with the LFG enhancements, make the game feel not so empty.

I have also been working on the unicorn mount quest. This quest is supposed to be long and difficult, to make the reward seem worthwhile. Someone should let the developers know that quests that involve killing 50+ mobs is long, but in no way enjoyable. This is one quest where the developers (in my opinion) were still stuck in their generation 2 mindset. They have a rich diplomacy and crafting system at their command, that should have been integrated into the quest line. So, instead of going and killing 45 lizardmen (Skrilien), why couldn't I have parlayed with their chief to convince them to leave a local tribe of unicorns alone? Or the few quests where you fetch pieces to build some unicorn communication device, it would've been nice to have the option of whacking critters to assemble the components, or perhaps get a bucket of parts that you could bring to a crafter who could cobble them together.

Also, I went through my screenshot folder and uploaded a few more screenies from Vanguard. Most of them are of me cruising around on a rented flying mount. I definitely prefer the griffin over the wyvern. Check them out here.

Repair All coming to Telon!

From the latest test server patch notes:

GUI NOTES

- A "Repair All" button has been added.

It's interesting how little features can cause big complaints. This was one of the top points that people moaned and groaned about--it's nice to see that it will finally be in the game!

And yes, I'm back playing Vanguard. I gave EQ2 a try (and may actually keep my subscription from a purely dabble standpoint), and whenever I played, I realized that I missed playing VG. So, now I'm back, looking forward to the changes that Sony has proposed (yay for server mergers!), and am hoping to watch the game get more and more polished.

Vanguard on hold

I had some Vanguard screenshots that I had taken a while ago that I had yet to upload, so I chucked them into the photo album.  These will probably be the last there are for a while because I've basically given up on playing Vanguard.

Unfortunately I've reached a point in the game where I feel that the time requirements are too high for my play style.  My rogue currently is unable to do any real questing solo, which means that I need to group up to get anything accomplished.  Unfortunately, if you don't already have an established static group in the game, forming a PUG is your only option for grouping.  This, however, is time consuming (and not always successful), due mostly to the large size of the world, the modest number of players, and the large travel times to get anywhere.  By the time a group is formed and everyone meets up, at worst 20 minutes have passed.  I have kinda reached the point where I can rarely want to dedicate 3+ hours daily to play (call it WoW burnout), so the time it takes me to get going in Vanguard sucks away too much time from my general playtime.  So, basically, I'm putting it on the shelf, and like most people who tried it out, will come back in a few months to see where it's at.

Inara gets tabled

Yep, it's true, I tabled the cleric in Vanguard. The story has all the details (and no, I didn't quit Vanguard)...

Around Telon

I uploaded some of the pictures I've taken of Telon here. I'm running the game at the Highest Quality settings on an EVGA 7950GT.

Check them out here.
