Buccaneers

Standard def Bucs

I knew DirecTV's HD switchover from MPEG2 to MPEG4 was coming, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.  When I checked the listings this morning for the Sunday Ticket games I realized that none of them were listed in HD and I immediately knew what was going down.

I guess I need to call up Direct and have them swap out my old MPEG2 receiver for one of their new swanky receivers.  So I guess for the short term, I'll be forced to watch the Bucs in blurry SD.  Given how they're playing in the first quarter of today's game, I'm not missing much...

Here we go again

I was reading this blog post about the Bucs final cuts, and the combination of these two points made me shake my head:

  • Obviously, in keeping rookie QB Josh Johnson, the Bucs have again decided to keep four quarterbacks, at least for now. Letting go of Johnson now would have exposed him to the rest of the league. Plus, practice squads won't be formed for a couple days.
  • The Bucs will be particularly thin on the offensive line, where they kept just eight players. And that includes injured Davin Joseph (foot), who will miss at least several weeks after surgery. While he's out, the Bucs have just two offensive line backups: Anthony Davis and Dan Buenning.

I still don't understand Gruden's fascination with keeping four quarterbacks.  It seems like he knows that after Garcia, the rest are junk, so he'll just interchange them as they play depending on who looks the best moment.  I don't ever really remember that being successful.

And finally, good luck Michael Spurlock, you're still the man...

The football itch

I didn't realize just how much I missed football until I watched the first score of the Gators' game today and cheered a bit when they punched it in.  Then I really got psyched, because I realized my one true love, Buccaneers football, kicks off next week!  That is, they should, barring a washout of New Orleans by Gustav...

Go Bucs!

Bucs schedule is out

Bucs logoHere's a nice little bit of analysis on the Bucs upcoming '08 schedule from your friends at the St. Pete Times.  Way back when (in the pre-parity days), I used to be able to predict the Bucs final record to within a game.  The first rule was if you counted more than 6 wins, try again because a 7 win season was crazy talk.  Nowadays I've given up trying to predict the Bucs record.  If recent history is any indication, they'll be back in the toilet like they do every other year under Gruden, and this time next year, we'll be back on the bi-annual "If Gruden doesn't do something this year, he's gone" merry-go-round.  But hope springs eternal and a winning season sounds pretty nice in April.

History was made

It only took 32 seasons, 498 regular-season games and 1,865 kickoff returns for us long-suffering Bucs fans to finally witness a real, live, kickoff return for a touchdown.  Michael Spurlock did the magic, fielding a kick midway through the first quarter of yesterday's game against the Falcons, a returning it the length for the score.  Announcers and producers everywhere are also overjoyed, since they now don't have to feel obligated to say before the start of every game something along the lines of "the Bucs have never returned a kickoff for a touchdown," which had turned from an interesting sidenote, into some sort of obligation.

In all my years as a Bucs fan, I've been around for a lot of fun, memorable moments.  I remember the first punt return for a touchdown by Vernon Turner against the Lions--I was listening to it over the radio in Gainesville, since the game as per usual in those days wasn't shown on local TV.  I remember the 10-6 record and that first playoff game in ages in 1997.  There was the division championship (the first after all those years of futility) in 1999.  There was the NFC Championship victory in Philly when the temperature was below 40.  There was the Superbowl in 2002.  I've seen a lot of records fall while being a Buc fan, and having this last, final notorious stat go down wraps up everything nicely.

Here's a fun little site put together by the St. Pete Times to commerate the feat.  You can infer the magnitude of this just by all the hoopla surrounding it.  Also from the site, here's some great statistics:

"Like those faceless workers who built the pyramids, or didn't build them, 139 other men had slaved on Bucs kickoff returns across those 32 seasons, running 37,395 yards, more than 21 miles, without paydirt. Isaac Hagins went first, on Sept 12, 1976. Sunday marked 11,418 days and six presidents since that had happened.

The Streak was a beautiful thing. The Bucs played 497 regular-season games, in 53 stadiums in 38 cities, without running a kick back. Next to 497, the longest other streak from the beginning of a franchise's history belongs to Seattle - at a puny 112 games. The Dolphins and Saints returned kickoffs for touchdowns on the first plays in their histories.

Since The Streak began, other NFL teams had combined for 298 kickoff return touchdowns, Chicago leading with 18, with Devin Hester having four of those in just 29 career regular-season games."

Bucs & Falcons tomorrow

IMG_0356.jpgHere's my ticket for the Bucs/Falcons game tomorrow downtown at the Georgia Dome! The seats are lower level, in the corner of the endzone, and looking at the GA Dome website, they don't look too bad. I'll be bringing my camera and taking lots of pictures. Hopefully, the Bucs lay down the law on the Falcons, but we'll see. They have a nasty habit of losing games that they should win...

Oh, and no I didn't pay face value for the ticket--they're giving these things away here now since the Falcons are so lousy. :D

How about that?

A 28 yard touchdown run right up the gut for Ernest Graham! Stats so far, 5 carries, 64 yards, 2 TDs. The Rams defense is tired, and the Bucs line is controlling the game,

Congrats to Ernest Graham

Former Florida alum Ernest Graham on scoring his first career pro touchdown. He came in for the injured Cadillac Williams and lugged the rock for around 30 yards on the last drive. With the ball on the 8, he got some great blocking, ran along the right side of the line, and hustled into the end zone.

Nice to see Graham, who's worked hard after a stellar collegiate career, finally get his break.

Too funny!
